We have been wrestling with this for some time. Having moved from a commendation certificate for outstanding work (great at recognising excellence but seemingly missed the triers) to a House point system (3 HP awarded as an equivalent to a commendation, but also scope to recognise good effort), we were disappointed to see that the motivational impact of HP was diminishing from midway through Year 8 onwards.
We spent some time looking at other options, including the online points system – the idea of instant accessibility from home, and unlocking games with successful point awards – and then reflected on the salient concept. What is motivation?
I especially like the mastery idea – that many children can be motivated by the sheer pleasure of achieving something that might be challenging but with stickability, can be managed. I look forward to reading some of the other points raised in the linked articles.
